FOR CAMPERS:

Dear _________ [e.g., Governor Newsom, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, your local State Senator, your local State Assembly Member, or all of the above],

I am writing to you for your help with the rising costs of campground reservations.  The campground we usually stay at has increased its rates by _____ since 2021. That means for a week stay, we are paying $____ more than before.

I understand that a primary reason for rising campground prices is the increase in insurance rates.  Our family loves to camp and experience the outdoors, and until now it has been an affordable option.  Combined with inflation for daily living expenses, the rise in the cost of campgrounds has made it difficult for our family to afford a camping or any other vacation.

I implore you to take action to reduce insurance rates for campgrounds so that these wonderful vacation locations can stay in business and keep rates affordable for families like ours.

[OTHER POSSIBLE LANGUAGE]:

  • We also fear the campgrounds we love to visit will go out of business if operating costs are not lowered.

  • The families who own campgrounds and their staff from surrounding communities will face serious economic hardship if they are forced to close down.

  • Closure of campgrounds will also detriment the communities where they are located.

  • The cost of camping is undermining the state's goals to make the outdoors more accessible for all Californians.

  • [To camping industry leaders - Camping World, REI, etc.]:  We need your help to educate our state leaders of the need to lower campground insurance rates and make camping affordable again.

Thank you,

FOR CAMPGROUND OWNERS:

Dear _________ [e.g., Governor Newsom, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara, your local State Senator, your local State Assembly Member],

I am a small business owner of the ________ campground/resort in __________. In operation since _______, we are an affordable, family vacation destination in a scenic natural environment. Our private property insurance company has withdrawn from the market and we are now limited to the California FAIR Plan, which provides imperfect coverage at a marked increase of $_____ per year.

The FAIR Plan rates are simply not affordable. If campgrounds are forced to close it will be devastating to the owners, staff we employ, and the tens of thousands of families who go camping each year.

Rising camping prices are undermining the state's goals of increasing access to the outdoors for all Californians.

For the sake of family-run campground owners like us and the families who visit our campgrounds each year, please take action to make our property and fire insurance rates more affordable.

Thank you

[OTHER POSSIBLE LANGUAGE]:

  • We were already operating on tight margins, due to the seasonal nature of our business and the high expenses of operating a camping resort. The spike in costs has forced us to attempt to pass on the higher costs to guests who are themselves facing rising expenses due to inflation.

  • Many of our regular guests are unable to afford higher nightly rates leading to lower occupancy rates. Our ability to stay in business is at risk. Other campground owners have confided they are in the same situation.

  • Our resort employs ___ local people and helps provide vibrancy to our local community. We are asking you to work with your legislative colleagues and the Department of Insurance to find a way to reduce campground/resort costs.

  • [To camping industry leaders - Camping World, REI, etc.]:  We need your help to educate our state leaders of the need to lower campground insurance rates and make camping affordable again.
